Trad goth aside, some aspects of the 90s goth fashion have always seemed pretty to me. Maybe it was that time when dark attire began to be very versatile: you had the grunge one the one hand, and different goth styles on the other (cyber goth, bondage, victorian etc).
Here are a few style icons that I still like:
Anna Nurmi and Tilo Wolff (the early Lacrimosa)

I think that after all these years Lacrimosa still have a special place in my heart. Plus, Nurmi´s bondage attire is all I ever want in a goth outfit.
Jack Off Jill

I was never into riot grrl bands nor into the kinderwhore fashion, but as JOJ being one of the first alternative bands I´ve discovered I still love their "murderous little girl" look.
Marilyn Manson and Twiggy Ramirez

I had to, you guys.... All is well if this has contributed to your sexual awakening at the time. I never was into MM´s music, but I´ve always loved what he did and who he was, plus I do believe he and Twiggy are talented musicians.
Lydia from Beetlejuice

Again, I had to... I love how there´s not much going on with Lydia´s look- there´s some huge black dress, messy hair and that´s it. You don´t have the exaggerated makeup, the edgy clothes or whatever. This is very down to earth goth, looks very comfortable too. I think why a lot of people find Lydia´s style inspiring is because it is practically applicable.
Malice Mizer

I know, I know- visual kei is an entire different realm, but you have to admit that it is fascinating. Malice Mizer were one of my favorite bands when I was a teenager, and I love their 90s looks more than the others. And for the record- I´ve always liked Közi and Klaha, and was never that excited about Mana.
Contrary to basically everyone, I hate Nancy from The Craft. Sure, she was dressed well but I didn´t like that representation of goth (nor witchcraft) in that movie. She was evil, narrow and stereotypical. I loved the main character in the film a lot more.
I also love the grunge look, but I couldn´t find photos that were very gothicly inclined.
What are your 90s inspirations?
My health issues are getting better. Luckily I will not need an operation in the end, which is a huge relief. Big assignment is due on Monday as well, so I am quite stress, can´t wait to relax afterwards.
Have a wonderful weekend!
N. Finsternis
Lydia and Jack Off Jill are definitely my faves. I really liked the fashion from The Craft too. I kind of miss the more simplified fashions from the 90's.
ReplyDeletesimplified is the exact word I was looking for!
Deleteglad your health gets better and i love to see that a lot of people i follow seem to go back to a bit 90s inspired wardrobe this summer! anne nurmi of course and i have to admitt that from that time i remember that 'wall of black' thing you had back then when meeting a few friends <3 XD i also remember how my friends dressed but when it comes to popular names i would have to pass or maybe mix a bit with 80s ^^ photos of popular faces on my walls back then and still now: anne nurmi, anne marie hurst and ehm... punk with a gothy phase: nina hagen.
ReplyDeleteI love to fill my walls with posters too, definitely love when goth mixes with other subgenres :)
DeleteI think I'll have to remember Lydia every time I'll be going to say 'I hate 90s goth fashion' and rethink my opinion >D But the again, I to me she looks more 80s than 90s. Because I absolutely ABHOR 90s fashion, be it goth or the mainstream fashion. Worst decade ever :< When I think about 90s goth, the only thing I see in my mind are narrow dresses reaching slightly above ankles, with thigh-high split, made from crushed velvet and chep lace, complete with flared sleeves, and some cheesy details like huge ass ankh on the chest painted with white paint. I see them and shudder.
ReplyDeletehahahaa the outfit your described is exactly what I am currently aiming for!!! XDD i must have me a long crushed velvet dress, it just looks so good!!
DeleteI didn't like Nancy either. Lydia was awesome. My favorite 90s goth fashion was probably from the White Wolf World of Darkness illustrations--top hats with long trench coats. Fishnets, tattered clothing.
ReplyDeleteoh, I´ll check that out, haven´t heard of these. When I think of the 90s I recall bands more than anything.
DeleteThat is so good to hear that you are not going to need surgery! :) I really liked this post, it was insightful and you are open and proud of your thoughts and taste which is great! You write what you like and why and that is a trait of a strong personality. ^^
ReplyDeleteoh Jade, that´s a very sweet thing to say!! reading this was very empowering :D
DeleteI grew up watching Beetle Juice every day after school. Always loved Lydia's style and angst. But it wasn't until adulthood when I found out she was my first goth'nspiration (i think I just made up that word :D).
ReplyDeleteEarly Lacrimosa style is everything! I admit I always wanted Tilo's wardrobe. White poet shirts please! I'm still trying to adapt it to my closet. :D
At the time I didn't listen to Manson's music, but it was all over the place and Twiggy's hair was all I ever dreamed of having in my own head, dreads!
Glad to read your health is improving. :)
oh yes, Tilo Wolff was my first band crush, I eyed his pictures of his early days for so long hehe! and Manson is aesthetically pleasing to the eye as well :P
DeleteIt's awsome you won't need an operation! Good luck with your paper as well. I haven't seen beetlejuice yet, and I wonder if it's only Tim Burton's or if there is an older movie with the same name. To be honest, I only know of Marylin Manson, from the above, but the only thing I like from him is his style
ReplyDeletelove his style as well, music has never made me so excited. I would recommend jack off jill as a very fun crazy girl band :D
